SEO for Plumbers

Illustration of a tradesman unloading tools from a white service van

SEO for plumbers is the work that puts a plumbing company in front of a homeowner who has water where it should not be, or no hot water at all, in the towns that company serves. Four things carry it: a Google Business Profile that ranks in the map pack, a page for each job that gets searched in a hurry, a license number shown where it can be checked, and call tracking that ties each booked job to the page that produced it.

ByteZero is a small and medium business marketing agency with offices in Van Nuys, California and Huntersville, North Carolina. This autumn we are rebuilding the website for a family-owned plumbing company in Huntersville. That site is not live yet, so nothing below is presented as a plumbing case study with results attached. What follows is keyword data we pulled from Google Keyword Planner on October 21, 2026, the published rules from Google, the FTC and the licensing boards, and the method we apply to trades that sell by phone call.

Key Takeaways

  • Freeze searches swing harder than any other plumbing phrase in our pull. In Google Keyword Planner for the United States, pulled October 21, 2026, "frozen pipes" ranged from 1,000 searches in June and July 2026 to 40,500 in January 2026.
  • Your state changes the curve. In North Carolina "frozen pipes" went from 20 searches a month to 1,300; in California, with almost three times the "plumber near me" volume, it never passed 390.
  • Google's help page lists three factors for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from the business to the person searching, and a town page does not move that pin.
  • Show the license where people can check it: a C-36 Plumbing Contractor license in California, and a license from the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors in North Carolina.
  • Paying for positive reviews is banned under the FTC rule announced August 14, 2024. Ask every customer the same way, with nothing attached.

Plumbing demand has a freeze spike and a summer bump

Plumbing search demand is a large, steady base with two weather events on top of it: a winter spike for frozen and burst pipes, and a summer rise in water heater and sewer line searches.

Here is the trailing twelve months, October 2025 through September 2026, for the phrases a homeowner actually types. We pulled it from Google Keyword Planner for the whole United States on October 21, 2026. The swing column is the busiest month divided by the quietest.

Search phraseAverage monthly searchesQuietest monthBusiest monthSwing
plumber near me823,000550,000 (Nov 2025)1,220,000 (Feb and Sep 2026)2.2x
emergency plumber near me135,00033,100 (Nov 2025)368,000 (Sep 2026)11.1x
drain cleaning90,50090,500 (Dec 2025 to Jun 2026)135,000 (Oct 2025)1.5x
water heater repair74,00060,500 (Jan to Jun 2026)135,000 (Jul 2026)2.2x
sewer line repair18,1009,900 (Jan, Mar to May 2026)49,500 (Jul 2026)5.0x
frozen pipes8,1001,000 (Jun and Jul 2026)40,500 (Jan 2026)40.5x
burst pipe2,4001,300 (Oct and Nov 2025)6,600 (Jan 2026)5.1x

Read the swing column, not the average. Drain cleaning barely moves. "Frozen pipes" goes up forty times in one winter month, and "burst pipe" follows it in the same January. Water heater repair and sewer line repair both peak in July 2026. A plumbing company that plans its website, its staffing and its ad budget against the yearly average is wrong in exactly the weeks that pay.

One row we cannot explain from the data alone: "emergency plumber near me" hit 368,000 searches in September 2026, the highest month in the window and well above its January figure. Keyword Planner reports the volume, not the reason, and we would not plan a year around one month we cannot account for.

The national curve is not your curve

Our two offices sit in different winters, so we ran the same freeze phrases again with the location set to each state. Same tool, same date, same twelve months.

  • North Carolina: "frozen pipes" ran from 20 searches a month (October 2025, May, June and September 2026) to 1,300 in both January and February 2026. That is a sixty-five-fold swing.
  • California: "frozen pipes" peaked at 390 in January 2026 and bottomed at 70 in September 2026, even though "plumber near me" averages 90,500 a month in California against 33,100 in North Carolina.

So a North Carolina plumber has a real freeze season worth building pages for, and a California plumber, on this statewide data, mostly does not. The practical rule is publishing order. Pages for frozen pipes, burst pipes and emergency shut-off belong live and indexed by November in a state that freezes, because a page written during the January spike is competing for a spot it has no history in.

Which plumbing searches deserve their own page?

Give a job its own page when it has its own demand curve or its own urgency: emergency and burst pipes, water heaters, drains and sewer lines, and leak detection each qualify.

The Huntersville company we are working with sells five services: leak repair, water heaters, clogged drains, whole-home re-piping and pipe replacement. Each one answers a different searcher in a different frame of mind, and one long "services" page cannot be the best answer to all of them.

The emergency page

The emergency page is read by someone standing in water. It should open with the phone number and the hours you genuinely answer, then tell them how to find and close the main shut-off valve while they wait, then name the towns you will drive to tonight. If you do not answer at 2 a.m., do not imply it. A missed call from an emergency page costs you the job.

The water heater page

Water heater searches split two ways: repair, which peaked at 135,000 in July 2026, and "tankless water heater installation", which averaged 40,500 a month and peaked at 60,500 in January and February 2026. Repair is urgent and local. Tankless installation is a researched purchase where the homeowner compares options, so it earns a longer page that explains the trade-offs and what an install involves at their house.

The map pack is mostly a distance question

Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the factors behind local results, and distance runs from the business to the searcher, so the map pack favors the towns closest to you.

Google's own help page for local results describes it this way: relevance is how well a profile matches what someone searched, distance is how far each business is from the person searching, and prominence is how well known the business is. Read the local ranking guidance from Google and notice what is missing. There is no setting that extends your reach into a town twenty minutes away.

That has two consequences for a plumbing company. First, the Business Profile is where the close-in calls come from, so its primary category, its services list and its photographs need to be complete and accurate. Second, towns at the edge of your area can still be won through organic results and paid search rather than the map pack. We cover the profile setup for service-area businesses in more detail in our guide to SEO for contractors.

Town pages a plumber can defend

A town page is worth publishing when it says something only your company can say about that town; a page that swaps the town name into the same text is a doorway.

Google is unusually direct about this. One of the examples on its list of doorway abuse is:

"Having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page."

Google Search Central, spam policies for Google web search

What makes a plumbing town page defensible is detail a competitor cannot copy: a job you completed there with photographs, the age of the housing stock you work on in that town and the pipe problems it tends to produce, how quickly you can be there from your shop, and the reviews from customers who live there. The Huntersville company serves Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Denver and Concord. A page for any one of those towns earns its place when there is a real job there to describe.

The same rule runs through our roofing SEO and HVAC SEO guides, because it is the same mistake in every trade: twenty town pages with nothing to say, built in an afternoon.

Put the license number where it can be checked

Homeowners look for proof that a plumber is licensed, so print the license number on the site where a customer can verify it with the state board.

In California, plumbing contracting falls under the C-36 classification from the Contractors State License Board. The CSLB's C-36 Plumbing Contractor definition describes the work as providing "a means for a supply of safe water, ample in volume and of suitable temperature" along with the removal of liquid waste. In North Carolina, plumbing contractors are licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, which runs a public license search on its website.

Put the number in the footer of every page, on each service page, and on the about page next to the owner's name. Make sure the business name on the license, the Business Profile and the website match exactly. When those three disagree, a customer who checks gets a reason to call someone else.

How do you get plumbing reviews without breaking the FTC rule?

Ask every customer for an honest review the same way after every job, and never tie a discount, a gift or any other incentive to a review saying something positive.

The FTC's final rule on fake reviews and testimonials, announced August 14, 2024, prohibits businesses from providing compensation or other incentives conditioned on writing consumer reviews that express a particular sentiment. "Ten percent off your next service for a five-star review" is exactly what it describes.

What works inside the rule is volume and timing. Send a short text with the review link the same day the job closes, while the homeowner is still relieved. Ask them to mention what you fixed and which town they are in. A review that says "burst pipe in Cornelius, fixed the same evening" helps the next searcher in Cornelius more than five stars with no words.

What a plumbing company should measure instead of rankings

Measure booked jobs by the page that produced the call; rankings are a leading indicator, and calls are the result you are paying for.

  1. Keep the real number on the Business Profile. It is part of your business identity across directories. Put dynamic tracking numbers on website pages instead, with the real number as the fallback.
  2. Record which page each call came from. The emergency page, the water heater page and each town page should report separately.
  3. Mark which calls became booked jobs. A page that produces ten calls and one job is doing worse than a page that produces four calls and three jobs.
  4. Review monthly, re-plan before each season. Freeze pages get attention in October and November; water heater and sewer pages before summer.

Our contractor website design work is built around that phone call: the number tappable on every screen, call tracking wired from day one, and a form short enough to finish on a phone.

The number behind "seo for plumbers" itself

Google Keyword Planner puts "seo for plumbers" at 480 average monthly searches in the United States, and it folds "plumbing seo" and "plumber seo" into that same figure.

That folding matters. When we asked the Keyword Planner API for the three phrases together on October 21, 2026, it returned one row for "seo for plumbers" with the other two listed as close variants of it. Ahrefs, on the same day, reported them separately: 2,100 for "seo for plumbers", 1,800 for "plumber seo" and 1,600 for "plumbing seo". Neither tool is lying. They count differently, and an agency proposal that quotes a volume without naming the tool, the location and the date is giving you a number you cannot check.

If you run a plumbing company and want to see how your own site handles the freeze pages, the license detail and the town pages above, our home services marketing team will walk through it with you.

Questions about SEO for plumbers

What is SEO for plumbers?

SEO for plumbers is the work of making a plumbing company visible in local search for the towns it serves. In practice that means the Google Business Profile and map pack, a page for each service that gets searched in a hurry, town pages with real jobs on them, reviews, and the call tracking that shows which page booked the job.

How long does SEO take to work for a plumbing company?

Business Profile changes such as the primary category, services and photographs are usually the first lever to pull. New pages and review-driven prominence build more slowly, because prominence builds from accumulated reviews and mentions. Anyone promising a ranking position by a date is describing something they do not control.

Should a plumber build a page for every town?

Only for towns where you have something specific to say, such as a job you completed there, the local housing stock and its typical pipe problems, or your response time from the shop. Pages that repeat the same text with the town name swapped match Google's own description of doorway abuse.

Can a plumber offer a discount for a Google review?

Not in exchange for a positive one. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, announced August 14, 2024, prohibits compensation or other incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment. Asking every customer for an honest review, with nothing attached, is the safe approach.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for an emergency plumber?

They solve different problems. Paid search buys immediate visibility during a freeze or a storm, which organic results cannot produce on demand. The map pack and organic pages build up over time and keep producing calls without a per-click cost. Running both, with paid weighted toward emergency phrases, covers the spike and the base.

How many people search for SEO for plumbers?

Google Keyword Planner reported 480 average monthly searches for "seo for plumbers" in the United States on October 21, 2026, with "plumbing seo" and "plumber seo" folded in as close variants. Ahrefs reported 2,100 for the same phrase on the same day, which is why any volume figure should name its tool and date.
