Disclosure: ByteZero publishes this page and is one of the companies scored. We have no Charleston office, we say so in the table, and we score ourselves on the same eight checks as everyone else.
Run a Google Maps search for a digital marketing agency from downtown Charleston and you get twenty results, many of them on Broad, East Bay, Meeting and King streets. Star ratings sit between 4.8 and 5.0 for nearly all of them. The differences show up in what each one is willing to publish: a price, a contract length, a named client with a number. On November 4, 2026 we pulled the Maps top 20 for three Charleston searches, picked nine agencies that appeared and have their own websites, and scored them, plus ourselves, on facts from their own sites.
A high score means an agency tells you more before you sign. It says nothing about the work itself, so treat it as a shortlist tool and call references.
The short version
- We scored 10 Charleston digital marketing agencies, ByteZero included, on eight public checks worth 0 to 2 points each, for a maximum of 16.
- Two agencies publish real prices: Digital Red Zone (monthly plans from $350) and Holy Webs (websites from $3,000).
- Four ask for longer commitments: SearchX looks for six months, Crimson Park Digital sets a 12-month retainer minimum, Matchstick Social pitches 6 to 12+ month partnerships, and Sweetgrass Marketing, though month-to-month, asks clients to stay three to six months.
- Sweetgrass Marketing offers two free months if rankings do not rise in the first two, the only results guarantee in the group.
- Digital Red Zone scored highest, 12 of 16, and is based in Irmo, near Columbia. Holy Webs, SearchX and Crimson Park Digital scored 11. We scored 10: no Charleston office, no full price list, 6 Google reviews, a fixed term on some plans and a "#1" claim on our own GEO page.
How we scored Charleston digital marketing agencies
We ran three Google Maps searches from Charleston through DataForSEO: "seo company", "digital marketing agency" and "web design". From the agencies that appeared and have their own website, we chose nine we judged representative for a local business owner, weighted toward agencies that came up in more than one list or carry many reviews. We left out niche specialists, such as a law-firm-only shop. We read each site's homepage, about, services, pricing, case study, AI search and contact pages, and logged every fact with its URL.
| Check | 2 points | 1 point | 0 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charleston presence | Street address in Charleston, Berkeley or Dorchester County on its site | Other South Carolina or Carolinas office, or the city named without an address | No local office shown |
| Industry focus | Named industries with their own pages or case studies | Industries listed, no depth | Generic |
| Published pricing | Prices or ranges on its site | Partial figures, such as a minimum | "Contact us" |
| Contract terms | Month-to-month or no long-term contract, stated | Longer or hedged term stated | Not stated |
| Case studies | Named clients with numbers | Numbers without names, or names without numbers | None found |
| AI search work | A described AI search, AEO or GEO service | A passing mention | Not offered |
| Google reviews | 4.8 or higher with 50 or more | 4.5 or higher with 10 or more | Fewer |
| Claims | No guarantee, no unverifiable superlative | An unverifiable "best" or "#1" claim | A ranking or results guarantee |
When a fact was ambiguous we gave the lower score. Disclosure checks favor agencies that publish more, and we wrote them, so treat our own row with the most suspicion.
The claims check comes from Google's own "Do you need an SEO?" page, which says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. The reviews check comes from Google's help page on local ranking, which says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business show up. One borderline call shows how the ambiguity rule works: SearchX lists its street address only in the code search engines read, so a visitor sees "Based in Charleston" and nothing more, and it scores 1 for presence.

What each Charleston agency publishes
Digital Red Zone, 12
Listed in Charleston Maps results without an address, and headquartered in Irmo, in the Columbia Midlands, by its own site. It is the most open on price: plans start at $350, $750 and $2,500 a month. It says no contracts are required to start, has pages for trades, healthcare, legal and restaurants, and a dedicated AEO page. Its results page still carries draft text labelled "Case Study Placeholders", and its one result, an HVAC company in Columbia that grew 100 percent a year for three years, is unnamed. Google showed 4.9 from 12 reviews.
ByteZero (us), 10
We have no Charleston office. Our Charleston digital marketing page says the work is served from Huntersville, NC and Van Nuys, CA, which scores one point. Our named results are local, and our LowCountry Coastal Excursions case study shows the main one: $9,653 in July 2026 ad spend returned $54,331 in tracked bookings across 110 trips, 5.6 times spend, and Charleston Shark Teeth Hunting went from 1,623 to 5,018 search impressions in its first month, up 209 percent. We publish no price list, though our Charlotte page quotes a range from recent proposals, which scores 1. Our pages say no long-term contracts, and we score ourselves 1 there because some of our newer plans carry a fixed term. When we scored this list, our generative engine optimization page showed a "#1 GEO visibility" figure a reader could not check, which costs a point on claims. We removed it in November 2026 and keep the point off until the next quarterly rescore. Our Google profile shows 5.0 from 6 reviews and did not appear in the Charleston results.
Holy Webs Charleston, 11
Led by founder Jeremy Murphy, with prices on the site: custom websites from $3,000 to $8,000+, and maintenance plans at $50 or $150. Social media contracts are month-to-month with 30 days' notice, and the SEO term is not stated. Its homepage has an AEO section that includes an AI assistant readiness audit. The site gives no street address. Google showed 4.8 from 72 reviews, and the site calls Holy Webs "The Best SEO company in Charleston, SC".
SearchX, 11
The visible site says "Based in Charleston", and the street address, 838 Morrison Dr, appears only in its schema code. It has industry hubs for home services, hospitality and healthcare, a dedicated AI SEO page that it says is no promise of AI citations, and named results marked as client-reported, such as Blue Collars 24hr Plumbing & HVAC growing from a $1.5M to a $7M operation in two years. Its lead form asks for a six-month minimum and $3M+ in revenue. Google showed 4.9 from 84 reviews. Its headline calls it the #1 Charleston SEO and paid media agency.
Crimson Park Digital, 11
Founded in 2018, headquartered in Charlotte, with a Charleston office at 158 Church St. It has pages for healthcare, hospitality, tourism and property management, a generative engine optimization service with a standalone AI visibility audit, and a named case study for United Vein & Vascular Centers with average keyword position improved by 60 percent. Retainers carry a 12-month minimum and a 25-hour monthly floor. The Charleston Google listing had 3 reviews.
Blue Ion, 9
Founded in 2000, with a studio at 301 B King St and offices in Greenville and Asheville. It has worked with Explore Charleston since 2002, and a post on its blog reports a 2014 display campaign that drew 1,420 visitor guide requests at a $2.62 blended cost per conversion. We found no AI search service, prices or contract terms. Google showed 5.0 from 10 reviews.
Matchstick Social, 9
Opened on King Street in 2013 and now at 1350 Ashley River Rd in West Ashley. It publishes a $5,000 minimum project budget and positions its work as 6 to 12+ month partnerships. Its headline results, such as a 312 percent increase in qualified leads, do not name the client. Google showed 5.0 from 72 reviews. It says it was voted Best Marketing/PR Company in Charleston without naming the poll.
In The Black Marketing, 8
At 207 E Bay St, working with companies above $2M in revenue. It has among the strongest named results in the group, for example Express Sunrooms growing from $5M to $10M in three years. It publishes no prices, contract terms or AI search service. Google showed 5.0 from 51 reviews, and its homepage cites "3x Best Marketing Firm In South Carolina" without a source.
Sweetgrass Marketing, 5
At 192 E Bay St, month-to-month with cancellation at any time, though it asks clients to stay for three to six months, which scores 1 on contract terms. Its portfolio names clients, including Dorchester County Library, without figures, and its FAQ explains why it does not publish SEO prices. It offers to work free for two more months if rankings do not rise significantly in the first two, which we score as a results guarantee. Google showed 5.0 from 10 reviews.
Ranking Carolina, 5
Founded in 2007, with offices on East Bay St and in Myrtle Beach, both marked "By Appointment Only". Its seven-page site makes no guarantee or superlative claim, and publishes no prices, contract terms, case studies or AI search service. Google showed 4.9 from 61 reviews.
An Amazon specialist in the results
Palmetto Digital Marketing Group appeared in our "digital marketing agency" results with 5.0 from 136 reviews, the largest count in Charleston. Its site describes an exclusive focus on Amazon sellers, working on commission. That can suit a product brand, and it is a different service from local SEO and ads, so we did not score it with the others.
Google reviews for each agency

Five agencies cleared 50 reviews at 4.8 or higher. Ours is one of the two smallest counts on the chart. An agency that sells local SEO should be able to show a strong profile of its own, so hold us to that too.
How to use this list
Pick three agencies that fit your budget and season, and ask each for two clients in your trade you can call. Ask for the minimum term in writing and who owns the ad accounts, Google Business Profile and site files if you leave. If you sell tours or rentals, ask how they report return from booking data during the off season. For a South Carolina view beyond the city, see our South Carolina digital marketing page, and for AI answers, our generative engine optimization page explains how we track ChatGPT and AI Overview mentions. Our Charlotte SEO company comparison applies the same eight checks upstate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best digital marketing agency in Charleston, SC?
No official ranking exists. On our eight public checks, Digital Red Zone scored highest at 12 of 16, and Holy Webs, SearchX and Crimson Park Digital scored 11. Among agencies with a Charleston street address on their own site, Crimson Park Digital scored highest. Call references before you choose.
How much does a Charleston digital marketing agency cost?
Two agencies publish prices. Digital Red Zone's plans start at $350, $750 and $2,500 a month, and Holy Webs lists custom websites at $3,000 to $8,000+. Matchstick Social sets a $5,000 minimum project budget.
Do Charleston agencies require long-term contracts?
Some do. SearchX looks for six months, Crimson Park Digital sets a 12-month retainer minimum, and Matchstick Social pitches 6 to 12+ month partnerships. Sweetgrass Marketing is month-to-month but asks for three to six months. Some of our own newer plans also carry a fixed term. Ask for the minimum term and notice period in writing.
Can an agency guarantee rankings in Charleston?
No. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Sweetgrass Marketing offers two months of free work if rankings do not rise in the first two. Read the conditions before relying on it.
Which Charleston agencies offer AI search optimization?
Digital Red Zone, Holy Webs, SearchX and Crimson Park Digital each describe one on their sites, and so do we. They differ in how they measure it, from a one-time readiness audit to monthly prompt tracking, so ask to see a sample report. No agency controls what ChatGPT or AI Overviews cite.
Does it matter whether my agency has a Charleston office?
Less than it used to for the work itself, which happens in ad accounts and on your site. It matters for photo shoots, for in-person planning before the season, and for knowing which streets and neighborhoods your customers search from. Six of the ten agencies here show a street address in Charleston County on their own sites.
Why is ByteZero on a Charleston list without a Charleston office?
Because we run ads, SEO and sites for Mount Pleasant clients and publish their numbers. We score one point for location instead of two, none for reviews, and one each on pricing, contract terms and claims, which puts us at 10. A free audit lets you test us against the others.
